Car Accident Doctor and Chiropractor in Jacksonville, FL

A Jacksonville Injury Clinic for Car Accident Care

After a car accident, you may need more than one kind of provider. East Coast Injury Clinic brings medical doctors (MDs), advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), chiropractors, physical therapists and in-house diagnostic testing together, so your evaluation, treatment and records stay in one place.

Our care team includes MDs and APRNs who can evaluate you for a Florida PIP Emergency Medical Condition (EMC), chiropractic neurologists (chiropractors with post-graduate training in neurology), physical therapists, EMG/NCV and VNG testing, concussion care, a visiting interventional pain physician, and a psychiatrist for anxiety, sleep problems and other emotional effects of a crash.

Crashes are common here. Duval County recorded 23,013 crashes and 15,480 injuries in 2024, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Whether you were rear-ended on I-295, sideswiped on J. Turner Butler Blvd (JTB) or Southside Blvd, or hit in a parking lot near St. Johns Town Center, you can be seen at our Southside clinic on Deerwood Park Blvd or our North Jacksonville clinic on N Main St, north of I-295. We see patients from across Duval County. Call (904) 513-3954 to schedule.

Car Accident Care at a Glance

  • Florida PIP requires initial treatment to begin within 14 days of a car accident (F.S. 627.736).
  • Only an MD, DO, physician assistant, APRN or dentist can make the PIP Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) determination. A chiropractor cannot.
  • Without an EMC finding, PIP medical benefits are limited to $2,500.
  • Florida PIP pays 80% of reasonable charges for medically necessary care, and it does not pay for massage therapy or acupuncture.
  • East Coast Injury Clinic does not perform MRI on site. When an MRI is needed, we refer you to an imaging center.

What to Do After a Car Accident in Jacksonville

  1. Check for emergencies first. Call 911 if anyone is seriously hurt, and review the warning signs below.
  2. Get the crash report number. If police respond, ask the officer for the report number and write it down.
  3. Notify your auto insurer. In Florida, your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage usually pays first. Ask for a claim number and your adjuster’s contact information.
  4. Start medical care within 14 days. Florida PIP pays medical benefits only if initial care begins within 14 days of the crash. An emergency room visit counts, and so does a visit with an eligible provider such as a medical doctor or a chiropractor. Our post on the PIP 14-day rule after a Jacksonville crash walks through the first two weeks.
  5. Keep your paperwork. Save ER or urgent care discharge papers, photos, receipts and a simple log of your symptoms.
  6. Take legal questions to an attorney. We are a medical clinic and do not give legal advice. If you have an attorney, we can coordinate with your attorney on records.

Go to the ER or Call 911 First If You Have

  • Loss of consciousness, confusion, repeated vomiting or a headache that keeps getting worse
  • Slurred speech, vision changes, trouble swallowing, or one pupil larger than the other
  • Chest pain, trouble breathing or abdominal pain
  • New weakness, numbness or tingling in the arms or legs, or trouble walking
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
  • Severe neck pain after a hard impact, a visible deformity or heavy bleeding
  • Pregnancy with any abdominal pain, bleeding or change in the baby’s movement

After the ER, we can see you for follow-up care.

Symptoms That Can Show Up Hours or Days Later

Some crash injuries are not obvious at the scene, including many common airbag injuries. Get evaluated if you notice:

  • Neck pain or stiffness, which may point to whiplash
  • Headaches, dizziness, brain fog or trouble concentrating (see headaches after a car accident)
  • Low back pain, or pain that travels into an arm or leg
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness
  • Shoulder pain or trouble reaching overhead
  • Trouble sleeping, anxiety about driving or flashbacks

Car Accident Doctors, Chiropractors and Therapists Under One Roof

Crash injuries often involve more than one part of the body. Our providers work from one shared record, so your medical evaluation, chiropractic care, therapy and testing can follow one coordinated plan.

1. Medical Evaluation by MDs and APRNs

Our medical doctors and APRNs take your history, examine you, screen for red flags and order imaging such as X-rays or an MRI when your exam calls for it. They can also determine whether you had an Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) for Florida PIP. That finding is a clinical judgment based on your exam, and we cannot promise one in advance.

2. Chiropractic Care From Chiropractic Neurologists

Our chiropractors include chiropractic neurologists: Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) with post-graduate training in neurology. Car accident chiropractic care may include spinal adjustments using Diversified or Activator techniques, soft-tissue work and home exercises, designed to help reduce pain and restore motion. A chiropractor can start and continue your care, but cannot make the PIP EMC determination.

3. Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

Our physical therapy team builds rehab plans with range-of-motion, strength, balance and functional training. For dizziness or balance problems, vestibular rehabilitation may help. Under PIP, physical therapy is provided on referral as part of your treatment plan.

4. Nerve and Balance Testing: EMG/NCV, VNG and MRI Referral

If you have numbness, tingling or weakness, EMG and nerve conduction (NCV) testing can help show whether a nerve is irritated or injured. These tests are often more informative a few weeks after an injury, so your provider will advise on timing. For dizziness, videonystagmography (VNG) records eye movements to help assess the inner ear and balance system. For a suspected disc or nerve root injury, your provider may refer you for an MRI at an outside imaging center and review the results with you.

5. Concussion Care

A concussion, also called a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), can happen even if your head did not hit anything, because the fast back-and-forth motion of a crash can move the brain inside the skull. Concussion care at our clinic may include neurological assessment, balance testing, vestibular rehabilitation and a gradual plan for returning to work and driving.

6. Interventional Pain Management

If pain continues despite conservative care, a visiting interventional pain physician may evaluate you for procedures such as epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks or facet joint injections. Learn more about pain management.

7. Post-Accident Psychiatry

Anxiety about driving, trouble sleeping, low mood and flashbacks are common after a crash. Our psychiatrist sees car accident patients for injury-related anxiety, PTSD symptoms and depression, in person in Jacksonville or by telepsychiatry. Learn more about psychiatric care after a car accident.

Common Car Accident Injuries We Treat

  • Whiplash, also called whiplash-associated disorder (WAD): a neck injury from rapid acceleration and deceleration, often in rear-end collisions. It can cause neck pain, stiffness, headaches and upper back or shoulder pain.
  • Concussion: headaches, dizziness, light or noise sensitivity, trouble concentrating and sleep changes.
  • Neck pain and back pain: sprains, strains and joint irritation, which are among the most common crash injuries.
  • Herniated disc: disc injury that may cause pain traveling into an arm or leg, numbness or weakness. Nerve testing may help clarify what is going on.
  • Shoulder injuries: seatbelt and steering-wheel forces can strain the shoulder and rotator cuff, limiting reach and sleep.
  • Pinched nerves, sciatica and headaches related to the crash.
  • Jaw (TMJ) pain: the same fast neck motion can strain the jaw joint and chewing muscles.

What we don’t do: we do not perform surgery or MRI scans in-house. If your exam points to a fracture, a surgical problem or a condition outside our scope, we refer you to the right specialist. Recovery from crash injuries often takes weeks to months, and individual results vary.

Florida PIP, the 14-Day Rule and the EMC

Florida is a no-fault state. The Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage on your own auto policy is usually the first to pay your medical bills after a crash, no matter who caused it. Florida drivers must carry at least $10,000 in PIP, and that amount is shared between medical benefits and lost-income benefits.

  • The 14-day rule: PIP pays medical benefits only if you receive initial care within 14 days after the accident (Fla. Stat. 627.736). It is a deadline to start care, not a date when your coverage ends.
  • The EMC finding: medical benefits can go up to the $10,000 PIP limit, once a medical doctor, osteopathic physician, PA or APRN makes an Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) determination. A chiropractor cannot make this determination.
  • The $2,500 limit: if a treating provider determines you did not have an EMC, PIP medical reimbursement is limited to $2,500.
  • 80% of reasonable charges: PIP pays 80% of reasonable charges for medically necessary care. Your share is typically 20% plus any deductible you chose. Lost-income benefits pay 60% of lost gross income and come out of the same $10,000.
  • No massage or acupuncture: Florida PIP does not pay for massage therapy or acupuncture, regardless of who provides it.

Our front desk verifies your coverage before your first visit. If PIP runs out, other coverage may apply, depending on your policies: medical payments coverage (MedPay), your health insurance, the at-fault driver’s bodily injury (BI) liability coverage, or your own uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. For questions about your legal options, talk to an attorney of your choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of doctor should I see after a car accident in Jacksonville?

If you have emergency warning signs, go to the ER first. Otherwise, a clinic that combines medical and musculoskeletal care can be a practical place to start. At East Coast Injury Clinic, MDs and APRNs perform medical evaluations and can make a PIP Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) determination when the exam supports it, while chiropractors, physical therapists and other providers treat the injury under one plan.

How long do I have to see a doctor after a car accident in Florida?

For Florida PIP to pay medical benefits, initial care must begin within 14 days after the crash (Fla. Stat. 627.736). Many people choose to be seen sooner, because some symptoms take hours or days to appear. An emergency room visit counts toward the 14 days.

Is it a good idea to see a chiropractor after a car accident?

It can be, once serious injuries have been ruled out. Chiropractic care may help reduce neck and back pain and restore motion for many patients, and individual results vary. At our clinic, chiropractic care is paired with a medical evaluation, so fractures, nerve problems and head injuries can be screened for and referred when needed.

Can a chiropractor make the Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) determination?

No. Under Florida law, only an MD, DO, physician assistant, APRN or dentist can determine that you had an Emergency Medical Condition. A chiropractor can start and continue your care. If a treating provider determines you did not have an EMC, PIP medical benefits are limited to $2,500.

Does car insurance cover chiropractic care after an accident?

In Florida, your own PIP coverage usually pays first. PIP pays 80% of reasonable charges for medically necessary care, including chiropractic care, within your policy limit. Medical benefits can go up to the $10,000 PIP limit, once a medical doctor, osteopathic physician, PA or APRN makes an Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) determination. PIP does not pay for massage therapy or acupuncture. Our front desk verifies your coverage before your first visit.

How is my care paid for at East Coast Injury Clinic?

Most injury care at East Coast Injury Clinic is covered through one of four paths: auto insurance PIP after a car accident, a personal injury attorney’s Letter of Protection, state workers’ compensation for a work injury, or federal workers’ compensation (OWCP or Longshore) if you are a federal or maritime employee. We also see patients under Medicare, Tricare, VA Community Care, and a limited number of private plans. Our front desk verifies coverage before your first visit and explains exactly what is and is not covered for your specific case, so there are no surprises. Call 904-513-3954 or visit eastcoastinjury.com to start.

How many chiropractic sessions will I need after a car accident?

There is no set number. It depends on your injury, your exam findings and how you respond to care. Your provider writes a plan with goals and re-exams to track progress and adjusts it as you improve. Some patients need a few weeks of care, and others need longer.

Is it normal to feel pain days after a car accident?

Yes. Delayed symptoms are common with whiplash, concussion and back injuries. Pain, stiffness, headaches or numbness can appear hours or days later. Get evaluated if new symptoms appear, and go to the ER for warning signs such as a worsening headache, confusion, new weakness or loss of bladder control.

Do I need a referral to be seen after a car accident?

No referral is needed to schedule your first visit. Call us directly. If you were seen at an ER or urgent care, bring that paperwork so your providers can review it.

Can you coordinate with my attorney?

Yes. With your written authorization, we can coordinate with your attorney on records requests and send documentation of your exam findings, diagnoses, treatment and progress. We are a medical clinic, so we do not give legal advice or predict case outcomes. For legal questions, talk to an attorney of your choice.

How long does it take to mentally recover from a car accident?

It varies. Many people feel shaken for days or weeks, and some develop anxiety, trouble sleeping, depression or PTSD symptoms that last longer. If these affect your daily life, mention them at your visit. Our psychiatrist sees car accident patients in person or by telepsychiatry. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.

Do I need an X-ray or MRI after a car accident?

Not always. Your provider decides based on your exam and any warning signs. X-rays can help check for fractures, and an MRI shows discs, nerves and other soft tissue. We do not have MRI on site, so when one is needed, we refer you to an imaging center and review the results with you. If you have numbness, tingling or weakness, EMG and nerve conduction (NCV) testing may also help.

Will treatment hurt after a car accident?

Most care is designed to be comfortable. Some patients feel mild soreness for a day or two after an adjustment or a new exercise, similar to after a workout. Your providers adjust techniques to your comfort, including low-force options, and you can ask to stop or change anything at any time. Tell your provider if any treatment makes your symptoms worse.

Which East Coast Injury Clinic location should I visit?

We have two Jacksonville locations: Southside at 10550 Deerwood Park Blvd, Suite 609, Jacksonville, FL 32256, and North Jacksonville at 13453 N Main St, Suite 302, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Provider schedules vary by location, so call (904) 513-3954 and our front desk will help you choose.
